A carpenter should build, erect, set up, or fix wooden elements such as moulds for concrete, walls, joists, studding, rafters, stairways, window and door casings, and flooring.
The term "rough framing" refers to the process of constructing a framework out of vertical components (called "studs") that will support the installation of finish materials on the interior and outside of a building. Joists are horizontal components that span the width of a room or span the space between a wall and a beam. It is the joists' job to hold up the roof and the floor.
Hammers (for framing, trim, and roofing), a tape measure, chalk line, and a carpenter's pencil are all essential hand tools for carpentry.
