Use handwashing procedures that emphasise soap and water. Water and hand sanitisers are ineffective at removing allergens from food. In one study, liquid detergent, bar soap, and commercial wipes have effectively eliminated peanut allergens from hands.
Wet cloths/wipes and alcohol/quat wipes were more effective than dry wipes at removing allergens from surfaces.
The immune system identifies pollen and similar proteins in the food and triggers an allergic reaction. The allergen is destroyed by heating the product, making it safe for consumption.
Currently, there is no cure for allergies. There are, however, over-the-counter and prescription medications that may alleviate symptoms. Preventing allergic reactions can be accomplished by avoiding or minimising exposure to allergy triggers. Immunotherapy may diminish the severity of allergic reactions over time.
