Only firebrick, firebrick, or refractory brick should be used to construct a fireplace. Normal masonry cannot withstand the intense heat inside a fireplace and will eventually fracture.
Natural brick fireplaces are trending once more. However, what if you have already painted the masonry fireplace? Here is my perspective on the return of a classic and why both painted, and natural brick fireplaces can be timeless.
Masonry fireplaces do not conserve energy. These fireplaces lose approximately 90% of their heat up the chimney, with only 10% entering the residence. In addition, they typically heat only one room, so they should not be relied upon as a primary heating source during the winter.
Electric fireplaces are the most environmentally responsible option. This is because eco-friendly fireplaces emit no smoke or pollutants and can run on renewable energy. Electric fireplaces are also 100 per cent efficient, converting all the energy they consume into heat. However, they are more expensive to operate than a gas fireplace.
